Unique 120″ Screen Solves UST Home Theater Center Speaker Dilemma?

The most pressing problem facing any home theater enthusiast who is considering installing an ultra short throw projector as the focal point of their system is placement of a center channel speaker. A UST projector just so happens to occupy the same prime real estate directly underneath the screen where a center channel speaker also works best for dialogue duty.

AWOL Vision was the first ultra short throw projector brand to allow the speakers built into their UST projectors to function as a center channel speaker, but this solution requires that you pair it with their own ThunderBeat 4.2.2 wireless surround sound system, in essence giving you a complete 5.2.2 system, without an Ambient Light Rejecting UST projection screen.

But, how about a simple surround sound solution for consumers who already own or want to purchase an ultra short throw projector from any other brand?

Or for those who prefer the increased performance and flexibility of having a dedicated component home theater receiver as the central hub of their surround sound system?

You don’t have to sacrifice vivid colors and high-contrast from your ultra short throw projector by forgoing an ambient light rejecting UST screen in favor of a perforated non-UST screen, or cut multiple holes in the wall to hide front left, center, and right speakers behind it! Yet you can still eliminate front speaker clutter…

To keep it simple to set up yet still sound amazing, you could pair this screen with a decent quality surround sound receiver which can effortlessly handle the 4Ω load for the screen’s integrated front left, center, and right speakers, and also support wireless connectivity for a pair of rear surround speakers and a wireless powered subwoofer. You would need to separately supply or buy 6-conductor speaker wire to run from the front left, center, and right speaker outputs on back of the receiver to the inputs on back of the UST screen, perhaps terminated with banana plugs. Don’t forget an HDMI cable to run between your UST projector and the receiver.

After a bit of research, I recommend the Yamaha RX-A2A or a higher AVENTAGE model receiver, or the Sony STR-AZ3000ES or a higher ES model receiver as the heart of the system.

Keep in mind that wireless rear speakers and a wireless subwoofer need to be plugged into a nearby AC outlet for power, or recharging their batteries in the case of the Sony SA-RS5 speakers.

If you don’t care about wireless rear speakers and/or a wireless subwoofer and are okay with conventional hard-wired rears and sub, you just need to be sure that the receiver you select can handle the 4Ω load of the screen’s three speakers. You’ll need to do your own research if you plan to go the hard-wired route.
